Where extra spaces come from

Double spaces are usually typing habits; tabs and inconsistent spacing come from copying out of spreadsheets, code, or PDFs. Invisible trailing spaces ride along at the end of lines. Individually they are harmless, but together they make text look sloppy, break exact-match searches, and cause annoying false differences in diffs and comparisons.

This tool cleans all of it in one pass: repeated spaces and tabs collapse to a single space, the start and end of every line are trimmed, and runs of three or more blank lines shrink to one empty line. The blank line between your paragraphs survives, so the structure of your document stays readable.

Clean spacing without breaking paragraphs

Unlike a blunt find-and-replace on the space character, this cleanup is context-aware: single spaces between words are never touched, and paragraph breaks are deliberately preserved. That makes it safe to run on essays, blog drafts, and documentation — the text comes out normalized, not flattened.

Paste your text, check the live preview in the result panel, then Copy or Download the cleaned version. For text that needs a deeper scrub — smart quotes, zero-width characters, non-breaking spaces — follow up with the Strip Formatting tool.

Spreadsheet, PDF and CMS paste: before-and-after examples

When you copy a table column from Excel or Google Sheets and paste it into a text editor, each cell often lands with trailing spaces that the cell formatting was hiding. A column of product names like "Hiking Boot " and "Trail Shoe " looks fine visually but breaks an exact-match lookup — the stored string and the search string differ by invisible padding. Run the pasted column through this tool and every cell comes out trim: "Hiking Boot" and "Trail Shoe" with nothing trailing.

PDF copy-paste is worse. PDF renderers reconstruct words from glyph positions, and when two words sit close together the extractor sometimes inserts two or three spaces instead of one. A paragraph from a PDF contract might arrive as "The party agrees to" — readable but unusable in a diff tool or a CMS word counter. After cleanup, those double gaps collapse to single spaces and the text compares cleanly.

CMS editors — WordPress, Contentful, Notion exports — frequently introduce non-standard whitespace when you toggle between the visual and raw-HTML modes. A headline pasted from Google Docs arrives as "Product Launch Update" with non-breaking spaces ( ) that look identical to regular spaces but sort differently, break slug generation, and sometimes prevent search indexing from tokenising the phrase correctly. For that specific case, pair this tool with /text-trimmer to strip both regular and non-breaking whitespace from the line edges, then verify with a hex viewer if you suspect Unicode space variants are still hiding.

Before-and-after summary: a 400-word blog draft copied from a Google Doc arrives with 23 double spaces and 11 trailing-space lines; after one pass the word count is identical, the character count drops by 34, and the draft loads without any whitespace warnings in Grammarly or Hemingway Editor.

Developer and SEO use cases (CSV, JSON keys, meta titles, slugs)

In CSV files, a stray space after a comma turns "Alice, Bob, Carol" into three fields where two of them start with a space — the kind of bug that causes a LEFT JOIN to return zero rows because ' Bob' !== 'Bob'. Paste the CSV here, clean it, and the field boundaries become unambiguous. For trimming only the line edges without touching inner commas, /text-trimmer is the right companion: it leaves the comma-space patterns you want and strips only the leading and trailing padding.

JSON configuration files exported by design tools or BI platforms occasionally carry property keys with spaces: { "user name ": "alice" } is valid JSON but almost certainly a data entry error — every downstream consumer must know to trim the key before matching. A pre-commit cleanup pass through this tool catches those keys before they reach version control.

Meta titles and meta descriptions are measured in pixels, but search snippets get truncated at roughly 60 characters for titles and 155 for descriptions. A description that starts with two spaces effectively wastes two characters of visible budget, and Google sometimes surfaces the raw text including that leading whitespace in the snippet. Clean the whitespace before you paste into your CMS meta fields.

Slugs generated from user input must collapse spaces before converting them to hyphens; "hiking boots" becomes "hiking--boots" if you hyphenate without collapsing first, and double hyphens in a URL path are technically valid but confuse crawlers and look unprofessional. Pre-clean the source phrase here, then run your slug generator. For automated pipelines that generate slugs in bulk, /remove-line-breaks pairs well: strip line breaks first so each slug candidate is a single line, then remove extra spaces, then hyphenate.

Common mistakes when cleaning whitespace

The most common mistake is running a global find-and-replace on the space character with an empty string — that removes all spaces, not just the extra ones, turning "Hello World" into "HelloWorld". Always use a tool that collapses consecutive spaces rather than deleting every space.

A second mistake is conflating whitespace types. The regular space (U+0020), the non-breaking space (U+00A0), the thin space (U+2009), and the em space (U+2003) all look the same on screen. A naive cleanup pass only targets U+0020, leaving the others in place. If your source is rich text from Word, InDesign, or a web scraper, check for Unicode space variants — this tool handles standard spaces and tabs; for full Unicode normalization you need Strip Formatting.

A third mistake is cleaning whitespace in code blocks or pre-formatted text. Indentation in Python, YAML, and Makefile is structural — collapsing it breaks the program. Always scope your cleanup to prose content, not source code.

Finally, people often forget about the difference between cleaning and trimming. Cleaning collapses inner runs of spaces; trimming removes only the leading and trailing spaces on each line. Running only a trim pass on a document with heavy double-spacing will leave all those inner double spaces intact. Running only a collapse pass will leave trailing spaces on every line. This tool does both in one operation, but if you need them separately — for example, to trim a CSV without touching the inner field content — use /text-trimmer for edge-only removal.

FAQ

Does it remove double spaces?

Yes. Any run of consecutive spaces or tabs collapses into a single space. Single spaces between words are untouched.

Will my paragraph breaks survive?

Yes. One empty line between paragraphs is kept; only runs of three or more blank lines are compressed down to a single empty line.

Does it delete leading indentation?

Yes. Spaces and tabs at the start and end of every line are trimmed, so indented text comes out flush-left.
